The political sessions opened this Wednesday 03 December 2015 at the 7th edition of the Africities.
During the political sessions officials and delegates were unanimous: the development of the continent has to start from the ground and local authorities have a predominant role to play given that they are in daily contact with the people and consequently more aware of their realities.
Local authorities are very much aware of their responsibilities « Local authorities know what they want and where the want to be », stressed Khalifa Sall, Mayor of Dakar and President of UCLG Africa. According to him, « local authorities have even the will to become more efficient ». In order to achieve that « competence transfer » will require « resource transfer » as well pleaded the current President of the UCLG Africa:
« It is time to transform local governments efficiently », said Pravin Gordhan, South African Minister for Cooperative governance and Traditional Affairs. For that purpose « information exchange » are therefore required said the Minister; an idea that was warmly welcome by the Secretary General of the UCLG Africa, Jean Pierre ELONG MBASSI.
